Technical Report on Fieldwork

The objective of this technical report is to document NatCen’s contribution to the fourth sweep. It contains the following information:

  • Development work undertaken to prepare the fourth sweep, including pilot and dress rehearsal surveys
  • The sample design and the procedures for respondent selection
  • Summary of the final survey instrumentation
  • How the fieldwork was conducted
  • The progress of fieldwork, quality control and issues which arose during this phase
  • The verification of information on the achieved sample and the dispatch of thank you letters to respondents
  • Survey response
  • Procedures for coding, editing and preparation of the data

MCS4 Teacher Survey Technical Report

This report contains details of the design and conduct of the MCS4 Teacher urvey. MCS4 took place when the children were aged 7 and in their third year of compulsory schooling. The Teacher Survey was designed to collect information on a cohort child’s early educational development as well as further reference to understand a child’s cognitive results and data gathered in the main interview. It was carried out in all four UK countries.

During the MCS main respondent interview the parent was asked to give the name of the child’s class teacher and to give permission for the teacher to be contacted. The Teacher Survey was in the form of a postal self-completion questionnaire and collected information on the following areas:

  • Study child’s ability
  • Study child’s behaviour
  • Study child profile
  • Study child’s parents
  • Class groupings
  • You and your class
