MCS5 (2012)

The fifth sweep of the Millennium Cohort Study is scheduled to take place in 2012 when the cohort children will be age 11 and in their final year of primary school. The survey will include interviews with both parents (where co-resident), cognitive assessments and physical measurements of cohort members, a self-completion questionnaire for cohort members and a survey of class teachers in England and Wales.

Over 70 delegates from the scientific community, government departments and other stakeholders gathered to discuss the proposed content of the data collection instruments at the MCS5 survey.  Each of the study’s scientific advisory groups presented their proposals and invited comments and further suggestions from delegates.

The areas covered by the advisory groups were:

• Health
• Education, school and cognitive assessments
• Child activities, well-being, behaviour and lifestyle
• Family Resources
• Family demographics, family relationships and parenting
• Social and community context
• Genetics/Biomedical
• Ethics and methodology of surveying children

The programme, presentations and notes on the discussion are available to download from here.

Detailed development work will commence in Autumn 2010 with piloting work due to take place in Spring and Summer 2011.
