Methods of disclosure control: Best practice within longitudinal studies

The development of new and innovative methods of disclosure control, or the techniques used to safeguard the confidentiality of information, are vitally important to the current and future management of longitudinal data. With study participants asked to provide personal, and at times, sensitive details about themselves, it is essential that data managers employ best practice in disclosure control to ensure no individual is identifiable from published data.

This knowledge exchange workshop aims to share information and insight into current innovations within the disclosure control field. It will also discuss how these methods can be implemented in CLOSER studies with the aim of identifying and developing best practice.

This workshop is open to data managers and staff at longitudinal studies with a strong interest in disclosure control. All delegates should be prepared to contribute actively to discussions.

 

Provisional programme outline

The day will run from 10:00 – 16:00 with lunch and refreshments provided throughout the day.

Morning

The morning session will see guest lectures from a number of speakers including:

  • Harvey Goldstein (UCL & University of Bristol) speaking about statistical disclosure control through adding noise
  • Gillian Raab (University of Edinburgh) speaking about synthetic data
  • Paul Burton (University of Bristol) speaking about Datashield

Afternoon

In the afternoon session, representatives from CLOSER partners, including the Centre for Longitudinal Studies (CLS), the UK Data Service and the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), will report on their current approaches to disclosure control.

The workshop will conclude with an open discussion to identify best practice going forward for implementing and developing disclosure controls in longitudinal studies.
