Introductory workshop: Millennium Cohort Study

28th November 2012 9:30 to 16:30

This workshop introduces the Millennium Cohort Study to first-time data users. It includes a practical session where participants can experiment with analysing the data under the guidance of experienced users. It is jointly organised by the Centre for Longitudinal Studies (CLS) at the Institute of Education and the Economic and Social Data Service (ESDS) at the University of Essex.

Programme description

The workshop focuses on the data available from the first four surveys of the MCS at ages nine months, three years, five years and seven years.

The taught component covers:

  • background to the MCS
  • data and documentation available
  • the MCS sample and issues of weights, response, non-response and attrition
  • how to access the data.

The practical component will be held in the university computer lab and will cover a range of topics, including:

  • linking data from all four surveys
  • recoding variables
  • deriving new variables
  • examining frequencies and percentages
  • correlation and regression
  • how issues of weighting affect results
  • how to measure attrition and the implications this may have for research.
